This March, Access-Able would like to introduce Travel Companions as the newest category on our already extensive Links page.   This page will greatly assist individuals who  want to travel but are unable to find a personal care attendant or travel companion to make their trip a reality. 

These links span the globe and include group as well individual travel.  One offers scheduled group tours to the most popular destination in the United States while another offers services to those traveling to Hawaii.  There are even a couple of links that take you to companies that maintain an active database of caregivers and will help match you with someone who has just the right personality and attitude.

Undiscovered Britain & Ireland

Spring is here and once again, Undiscovered Britain unveils a fantastic lineup of accessible tours for 2007.  Founded by Ann Litt, Undiscovered Britain caters to travelers who want to experience the off-the-beaten-track treasures of the “real” Britain and Ireland.  Ann has a comprehensive knowledge of the British Isles and Ireland and each property or attraction offered has been personally inspected for accessibility.  The tours are complete and include accommodations, transportation and attractions and in some cases, meals.  If you have a desire to go off on your own, Ann also specializes in arranging customized itineraries!

Traveling with a group is a great way to experience a vacation and with Undiscovered Britain, the numbers are kept small to provide a cozy atmosphere.  The first tour is scheduled for June 25 to July 4 and includes Northern Ireland and Dublin.  You will start off in Dublin then travel north to Downpatrick for 3 days of exploration including a guided city tour of Belfast.  From here you will spend 2 nights in Letterkenny and day trips include a drive along the spectacular North Antrim Coast and a visit to the historic city of Derry for a visit with the “Bogside Artists” and their amazing murals.  Other stops include a visit to Glenveagh National Partk and Its’ castle and a stop at Ulster-American Folk Park.  You will finish up with 2 nights in Dublin with a guided city tour and a visit to the Guinness Storehouse (including a pint of its’ famous brew!).  In addition to all the sights and the good times, there will be plenty of opportunity to meet the wonderful people of Ireland, and experience their warm welcoming hospitality.

There are two Highlights of Ireland Tours this year, one is scheduled for July 22 – July 31 and the second is scheduled for September 9 – September 18.  These particular tours will provide a wonderful exploration of this magical country, starting in Dublin and ending in Shannon. After arriving in Dublin, you will spend 2 days and nights in this exciting capital city before heading west to the vibrant city of Galway.  Here you will spend the next 2 days exploring Co. Galway and Connemara.  From here you’ll head south for 3 nights, traveling through Co. Clare and winding up in Killarney where you will explore the local area.  The final day will be spend visiting Adare, the ‘prettiest town in Ireland’, where you will visit King John’s Castle and have a great farewell dinner and Irish show at the folk park in Bunratty.  There are a few variations in each tour so when you look at the Undiscovered Britain Site, read each tour for details.

All transportation will be on a fully wheelchair accessible luxury motorcoach. Accommodations are at first-class hotels that are fully accessible, and all touring; accommodations; taxes; baggage handling; airport transfers and entrance fees, as well as full Irish breakfast daily, and a 3-course dinner on 6 nights are included. Services of a full-time driver/guide and tour escort are provided throughout the tour.

Great Coastal Getaway

If the winter blues have you thinking about sun, sand, and surf, then you may wan to check out Sandollar Sity, located on the beautiful island community of Port Aransas, Texas. Sandollar Sity consists of several beach houses and condo-style apartments, two of which are wheelchair accessible. You will find them situated on the north end of Mustang Island with spectacular Oceanside views of the gulf of Mexico.

All of the condos at Sandollar Sity have decks (with furniture) facing the gulf, full kitchens, central heat and air conditioning, color TV and VCR as well as wireless internet. All linens are provided (but do bring your own beach towels) and there are barbecue pits and picnic tables located at the party area called the Sand Spot. The two accessible condos are 3034-A & 3034-B which are located on the ground floor and have one bedroom each. The doorways are 36” wide, there is ample room to move about and the bedroom has two double beds. The bathroom has been redesigned and has a roll in shower with grab bars, fold down seat and hand held shower head. There is also knee clearance under the sink.

Guests will enjoy the relaxing lifestyle on Mustang Island. Port Aransas is full of opportunities to unwind, shop, eat, and explore some very unique nature. For example; Mustang Island is located just north of South Padre Island and the Rio Grande Valley which, primarily due to its location, is a feeding ground for a multitude of migrating birds. The wetlands that line the bay sides of these coastal islands create an ideal habitat for waterfowl and bird watching is popular, especially during the fall and spring migrating season.
